In 1868, territory was taken from the then-Diocese of Santa Fe in New Mexico and the Diocese of Grass Valley in California to form the Vicariate Apostolic of Colorado and Utah. In 1870, the name was changed to the Vicariate Apostolic of Colorado, and the territory of Utah was transferred to the Archdiocese of San Francisco. The Diocese of Denver was officially created on August 16, 1887, and covered the entire state of Colorado.
